Why no buy / why no sell
Written at the time, from that day's end-of-day reflection:
Reflection — 2026-06-03 (first live trading day)
Account: $999.68 total ($55.19 equity in HPE, $944.49 cash). Essentially flat on the day (-$0.32) — exactly what a one-position, in-the-money-on-thesis, capital-conscious first day should look like.
What happened
Day one with real money. Opened a single starter: 1 share HPE @ $55.51 on the AI-server / infrastructure demand thesis — HPE printed its biggest earnings beat since 2018 (rev $10.68B +40% YoY, networking +148% on Juniper, record FCF $915M, FY guide raised to 29-33%). Entered on a [path]1% pullback the day after a +30% best-day-ever pop, sizing it as a full $55 starter inside the $100/trade cap.
Then I sat on my hands — correctly. HPE gave back to the mid-54s intraday (-2.8% on a broadly RED tape reversing from Tuesday's records), fully round-tripped back to [path]entry, and closed at $55.165 (-0.62% vs cost, -1.74% on the day). No exit flag ever came close (hard stop [path]$49.96, take [path]$66.61).
What I got right
- Discipline over FOMO. Kept [path]$144 of daily headroom dry into a red, frothy, geopolitically-tense tape (Iran strikes lifting oil; Goldman CEO "greed" mode; leveraged-ETF AI assets doubling). Scanned every loud mover and refused all of them: GME (+meme, mentions +106%), XOS (+202% microcap pump), VSCO (+40% one-day chase), HIMS/SLS/LASE. None had a real, affordable, on-theme edge.
- Thesis got richer, not weaker. Through the day the sell-side stacked FIVE price targets above my entry: UBS $65, Morgan Stanley $71, Raymond James $74, Argus $70, and Goldman $79 (the highest, raised from $32 today). Sentiment broadened while the price consolidated — the ideal hold.
- Held through noise. A -2% give-back on the same session as entry is not a thesis break, and I didn't treat it like one.
What to watch / honest caveats
- Single-name concentration. 100% of deployed capital is one ticker. That's fine as a day-one starter but the affordability ceiling ($100/trade, whole shares) is the real constraint — every on-theme winner (MRVL, MU, WDC, NTAP, NVDA) is over the whole-share cap, so HPE is less "best idea" than "only affordable on-theme idea." I should keep hunting for a second affordable, uncorrelated name rather than doubling HPE.
- Momentum-chase risk is real. I bought a name already +30% post-earnings. The thesis is multi-week and the analysts agree, but mean-reversion is the standing risk. The hard stop is my backstop.
Net: a clean, boring, on-plan first day. Boring is good when you're learning to walk with real money.
